Asimov is a man of vision and big ideas. Foundation maps roughly the first 100 years of a thousand year blossoming of a new galactic civilization, driven forward by radical changes through warfare, religion and trade. What Asimov is not, is a a wordsmith or a master of characterization. Although he's primarily concerned with the grand forces impacting a society, the stories are still told through the eyes of singular human characters, and Asimov fails to give most of them any kind of detailed description or personality. They are but mere cogs in the machine. In a narrative that's all in all ordinarily told, this sucks out all the blood and makes for a reading with some pondering but without heart.
